Breaking the Chains of Debt: Mathivanan's Journey of Transformation through Empowered World View ( Shared by Mathivanan, Loan Officer – Coonoor Branch)

Before joining VisionFund India, I was working at a private company in Coimbatore. I had to return home to live with my parents because our family was struggling under a heavy burden of debt. We didn’t know how to overcome it. In fact, in trying to solve our problems, I unknowingly followed the same path—taking new loans to repay existing ones. At one point, it became a way of life. For every need, we turned to loans. We began to believe that debt was the only solution to our problems. Over time, this cycle of borrowing became overwhelming, and we couldn’t see a way out.

Everything changed when I participated in the Empowered World View (EWV) training. For the first time, during one of the exercises, I experienced clarity. I realized how deeply we had been depending on borrowing instead of using the resources we already had. After the training, I went home and had an open conversation with my family. We made a joint decision to stop relying on loans and to work toward closing all our existing debts.

That was a turning point. I began to believe in the possibility of coming out of debt—not through borrowing more, but through the wise use of our resources. One of our neglected assets was our agricultural garden. Because of the debt pressure, we had stopped using it altogether. Even after the training, we had to take one final, large loan—but this time, it had a clear purpose: to close all our other loans and start afresh.

We paid off all our debts and used the remaining amount to revive our garden. Slowly, with consistent effort, we repaid that final loan too. Today, our garden is thriving, and we’re planning to set up a poultry farm with the income we’ve earned from agriculture. Now, our family is living debt-free and with renewed joy. The EWV training helped me see our past mistakes and empowered us to make better choices. It also restored my self-confidence—helping me realize that we can overcome challenges by recognizing and using the strengths we already have. We are now saving to buy another farm and working toward that goal as a family. This transformation didn’t just change our financial situation; it changed our mindset—and that has made all the difference.
