Financial Empowerment through Cattle Farming and Digital Loans in Rural India

In the quiet village in Southern India, a humble family has embarked on a journey of empowerment, one loan at a time. Sellamyemal and Selvaraj, a couple with a profound commitment to their children’s education, a commitment that has been unwavering even in the face of financial challenges. Her path to financial independence began a decade ago when she took her first loan of 15,000 Indian rupees. Her vision was to establish a reliable income source for her family through dairy farming, primarily supporting her children’s education.

She reflects on her journey, “I decided to buy cows with my loans because I can get regular income from the milk sales. The profit from our little dairy has been instrumental in supporting my children’s education.” With the profits from her dairy business, she’s provided her children with quality education. It’s a dream come true for Sellamyemal, who only completed her schooling up to grade 5. She ardently desires to give her children (aged 17, 15, 14) opportunities that she didn’t have, enabling them to achieve success in life. One key element that has made this transformation possible is the digitization of the loan process. In the past, obtaining and repaying loans was a cumbersome and time-consuming endeavor. Sellamyemal recalls, “Life is now easier to get a loan – I don’t have to spend money photocopying all the documents. And, when I got a check, I had to go get the check, deposit it, then wait for the check to clear – then go back to the bank to get the funds. I am very happy with the way this new digital process is going.” What sets VisionFund apart in Sellamyemal’s eyes is not just the cutting-edge technology but also the human touch. She appreciates the way the VisionFund loan officers interact with her, describing them as better communicators who approach her with compassion.

Sellamyemal’s success story has not gone unnoticed in her tight-knit village, where many of her neighbors are extended family. Her relatives and friends have been inspired by her journey and she has encouraged them to take out VisionFund loans. When asked about her neighbors’ perceptions of her success, she modestly remarks, “I would say ‘success’ is too big a word, but I am leading a very comfortable life, and I am happy with my loan.” Sellamyemal’s story is a testament to the transformative power of access to finance and the perseverance of a mother’s love. Through cows and loans, she has empowered her family to reach for their dreams, one step at a time.
